7/21/2019 Why do we need to obey?

The traditional Korean revival meeting preachers preached that you need to be obedient to the senior pastor because he is a servant of God. But this reasoning doesn’t hold up because anyone who has received Jesus as their Lord and Savior is a servant of God. Then what are the reasons why church members need to obey the senior pastor?

First, we obey because the senior pastor is responsible for the church. In the corporate world, the success or failure of a project rests on the team leader, so even though there may be differences, the final decision is the responsibility of the team leader. If something goes wrong, the company will ask the team leader. The senior pastor of a church is like a team leader—God has given him the responsibility to take care of the church.

17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. (Hebrews 13:17)

Church members can disagree and suggest or propose new ideas, but ultimately, they must leave the final decision to the senior pastor.

Second, we obey because it helps pastors grow. A senior pastor can help the members grow, but the church members can also help the pastor grow. Let’s say a senior pastor’s ability can be measured and he is performing at a 60 percent level. With encouragement from church members, he can improve and serve to a potential of 90 percent. If, on the other hand, his ability is at 90 percent and he is looked upon with disapproval, he may feel discouraged and perform at a 60 percent capacity level. Honestly, my ability as a senior pastor is only at 60 percent, but if church members overlook my weaknesses, recognize my strengths, and when it does not go against the Bible then follow in obedience, then I can be a better pastor.

Thirdly, we obey to become like Christ. Jesus lived a life of obedience. Jesus was part of the trinity. He took part in the eternal and the glory of the Father God but came in human form in humble obedience. (Philippians 2:6-8). When you practice obedience, you become like Jesus, especially when you are obedient to someone you do not need to obey then this is more evident. (from House Church Ministries Pastor’s Corner
